General Psychology Research Activity

Alex began to have difficulties with his class work. Behavioral issues at home and school were spiraling out of control. While at school he spent more time watching the clock than learning and was bullied because of his weight. He preferred the solitude found in video games to the companionship of friends. Alex lacked motivation and felt unhappy most of the time and he had thoughts of suicide. His parents, Tim and Diane did not understand his depressive mood swing and they were seriously concerned for their son. They tried various options to no avail and they were losing hope that a solution would be found before it was late. Through chance circumstances, his parents met a therapist and he agreed to see Alex. He was diagnosed and given prescription medication as part of his treatment. As mentioned in the introduction, a parent’s approach to raising their children is often the favored culprit in the development of ADHD and electronics are commonly deemed and accessory. Early in the video, it appears that his parents have not established structure conducive to learning healthy, productive behaviors. They seem to have very little control and the simple task of walking him for school becomes a debate between Tim and Alex. This evidence that bad parenting may be a factor in his problems, however, it does not prove that lack of discipline caused his behaviors. It is conceivable that he was genetically predisposed to having a mental disorder and they have adapted a lax parenting style in response to the symptomatic behaviors of such impairment. He spends enormous amounts of time playing video games and watching television which is a strong argument for those that place blame on over stimulation. On the other hand, people with some disorders often become hyper focused on stimulating or rewarding tasks. It is quite possible that he immerses himself in electronics as a result of some mental malfunction.

Tim and Diane had run of ideas and turned to church in hope of a miracle. They may not have found a miracle cure for Alex but they did meet the therapist. Alex was now in the care of professionals and explanation was conceivable on the horizon. Alex presented depressed and after 6 or 8 sessions it was decided Ale needed medication. The therapist referred him to psychiatrist, Asa Yancey, M.D. After talking with Alex and his mother, and reviewing the results of a depression scale inventory, Dr Yancey concluded that Alex did indeed have depression. He prescribed anti-depressants as part of his treatment. Drug treatments for depression have demonstrated positive results so the diagnosis brought relief to the McCartys. Unfortunately, the relief would be short lived. After three months on the medication, Alex attempted suicide while at school. One of Alex’s teaches, Lynn Sis made an important observation and concluded he could do well in class when was capable of paying attention. Dr. Yancey than had Alex take a computer test called TOVA, designing to indicate ADHD. Alex failed the test and this revealed his having ADHD. Having the correct diagnosis, Dr Yancey prescribed Adderall because on of the side effects is weight loss. A misdiagnosis almost led to tragedy which would seem to lend support for the argument against medication. However, according to the non-profit organization helpguide.org, a person with ADHD is six times more likely to have another psychiatric or learning disorder so it is also a strong point for advocates of awareness.
