The story focuses on 20-year-old Fredrick who joins a pirate group as apprentice. Fredrick main goal entails leaving the apprenticeship after his 21st birthday. As he leaves, he meets a young woman, Mabel Stanley the daughter of Major-General Stanley. They fall in love from their first encounter. Unfortunately, his birthday falls on 29th of February meaning the transition to the next year occurs each leap year. For this reason, the Pirate King tricks him into continued service in pirate group with facts that his 21st birthday will be after more than 60 years. He chooses to continue with apprenticeship and Mabel agrees to wait for him. Fortunately, when the police and pirates collide, the pirates are revealed as noble men prompting forgiveness from Major General, hence reunion of Fredrick and Mabel (Shepherd).

In the film, the part where Fredrick appears convinced that Ruth is very pretty and intend to take her as he leaves apprenticeship, appeals most. This concerns the fact that Fredrick joined the apprenticeship as an orphan and at tender age. Henceforth, Ruth is the only woman Fredrick knows though the Pirate King hilariously affirms when Fredrick asks him concerning Ruth’s beauty. As Fredrick and Ruth head to civilization, they meet beautiful young women and Fredrick realizes Ruth’s trickery hence gets mad. He abandons her and consequently falls in love with one of the
