The Greek god Apollo was one of the most revered and gods in the Greek pantheon, and is still an inspiration to the world today. This was mostly because he was the ideal image of the Greek man, handsome, wise and talented in music and poetry. But Apollo was also a powerful god in the human world. One reason was because his arrows were believed to start plagues, but he was also revered as the god of healing and brought medicine to man. Apollo also was responsible for the sun to rise each morning. He pulled the sun with a four horsed chariot across the sky. It was Helios’, the old sun gods job before he quit after his son died. Some of these were Delphi, Megara and Miletus. Delphi lied Northwest of Athens and held the Oracle of Apollo, the most famous of Apollo’s many oracles. People would travel far from the Mediterranean world to visit the oracle of Delphi to hear what their future would hold. Miletus have their patron god of Apollo for a good reason, Apollo was the god of colonization. Miletus was a Greek colony in Turkey, set up near the Southwest coast. Apollo was the patron god of the colony in hopes he would help guide it in the years to come. Miletus eventually became a powerful Greek city-state not on the mainland.
Another place where Apollo’s worship was important was on the island of Delos. Zeus impregnated Apollo’s mom, the Titan Leto. When Hera, Zeus’ wife, found out she banished Leto to never give birth on land. Leto gave birth on Delos because was a newly formed island, and was seen as sea at the time of the curse. The people there let her stay there and in return her babies would look after the island and its people. Leto gave birth to twins, Apollo and Artemis.
