Asthma is a disease that affects the breathing passages of the bronchioles. The chronic inflammation of the passages is what asthma is caused by. Asthma triggers are different from person to person. However, the one consistent thing with asthma is when airways come into contact with an asthma trigger, the walls of the passages swell and fill with mucus. The muscles contracting cause even further narrowing making it difficult to exhale. Asthma is a respiratory disease that you may live with everyday of your life. In addition, it isn't clear why some people get asthma and others don't, but it's probably due to a combination of environmental and genetic factors. If experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to visit an allergist for diagnosis. There is no cure to asthma but the symptoms can be controlled for most people. If you are diagnosed right away, you have a better time controlling it creating fewer severe attacks. Mild episodes may last only a few minutes and may be resolved spontaneously or with medication; more severe episodes can last from hours to days. An inhaler is essential to keep on an asthmatic person incase of an attack. It is used to open the airways and deliver medication to the lungs. This respiratory disease is the most chronic disease among children. Most children present symptoms around five years old. Young boys are more likely to develop asthma than girls however it reverses during adulthood. It is proven that asthma is a bit more common in African Americans however it affects all races.
