Human trafficking in India
Human trafficking is a social justice issue that occurs all over the world. It is especially prevalent in India. It is estimated 22 million people are victims of human trafficking in India. Human trafficking is the illegal movement of people for sexual exploitation or forced labor. Although this happens everywhere it is something that continues to flourish in India even though it violates human rights. Culture, cheap labor, and economic motivation are all factors that contribute to continuation of human trafficking in India. Culture is something that plays a huge role in human trafficking. In India when a woman meets a certain age she is considered an economic burden to the family. Arranged marriages are common in India. Women in India are commonly uneducated and jobless. In Indian culture women depend on their husband for financial support, if they don’t have a husband or financial support they are more susceptible to human Trafficking due to their lack of knowledge on human rights, education, and financial stability. Industries that require cheap or seasonal labor, or involve difficult and dangerous tasks are more likely to use forced labor. (Patel N30). In India the trafficked victims are often forced into labor. Forced labor includes long days with many hours, no pay, bad working conditions, and no adequate amounts of food or water. Another form of forced labor is bonded labor which is forced labor required to pay a debt the victim has. Brands like H&M, gap, and Wal-Mart have all been linked to trading with Indian companies that use forced labor. As people continue to buy from these brands, they support the forced labor and keep the trafficking industry
