There are two sides to this argument. But a boy was killed and someone needs to pay for it. Ponyboy was getting beat up by the Socs. Ponyboy had nothing to protect himself from or fight back. It was 5 big older guys vs. 2 tiny guys. Johnny should get the lightest punishment there is. First of all, Johnny was using self-defense. They had beaten him up before, so he knew how powerful they were. It was five big older, more mature guys over two little 14 year olds. One of the older, more mature guys was a drowding pony boy so Johnny jumped in and saved him. The socs had been drinking all night.
