The Harlem Renaissance was a period of cultural awakening and development among the African American people that carried on between 1918 and 1940, but saw its peak in the 1920’s. (Wormser 1). Like its namesake- the Renaissance of the fourteenth through seventeenth century- the Harlem Renaissance was a time of rebirth, during which black people learned to embrace their heritage and be proud of their culture. As participants in the Harlem Renaissance continually showcased their intellectual capabilities, the African American race as a whole began to develop a sense of self worth and a pride in what they were (Boyer 704).
