Water. We all utilize it at least once a day. Brushing our teeth, showering, and even drinking water are just a few of the ways we use it in our lives. But with the issue of climate change being put in the limelight, much of our fresh water, located in the ice sheets, is melting, causing a reduction in the freshwater available for us to harness. As a result, water scarcity is an issue that will only continue to grow in magnitude, and so the focus should be on implementing more desalinization of ocean water, considering that it is the largest source of water readily available to us. Though the process of desalination via distillation is currently very energy intensive, building more distillation plants and greater use of the technique will lead to optimization, alleviating concerns over cost, and help to address the issue of water scarcity. …show more content…
There are currently several techniques to accomplish this, including reverse osmosis and distillation, which will be the focus of this paper. The majority of present day desalination efforts convert seawater through various distillation means. Distillation, according to the Oxford Dictionary (2017), is the “action of purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling.” Essentially, what happens is that water is allowed to boil, resulting in pure water vapor, leaving the impurities behind. The pure water vapor is allowed to move down a tube that is cooled in order to allow the water to return to a liquid state before being dispensed in a collection chamber. It draws a lot of similarities with the Earth’s natural water cycle, as a
