“If we bear all this suffering and if there are still Jews left, when it is over, then Jews, instead of being doomed, will be held up as an example.” (Frank). This event dated back to 1933, when Hitler began his uprising to power. Knowing the power of the Nazis, Jewish citizens had to find a way to resist. During the Holocaust Jews participated in different forms of armed and unarmed resistance in order to maintain their humanity.
Many people during the holocaust used spiritual resistance as opposed to armed resistance. Some people would argue that spiritual resistance was better than armed. “Spiritual resistance refers to attempts by individuals to maintain their humanity, personal integrity, dignity, and sense of civilization” (Spiritual Resistance in the Ghettos 1). For example, some individuals would refuse to join the Nazi Army because they disagreed with their obscene views. “Jehovah’s Witnesses’ resisted Nazism through defiance. They refused to serve in the German Army.” (Non-Jewish Resistance 2) Although the Germans mostly only despised of the Jewish religion, some followers of other religions would not serve the Nazi Military. This is an example of spiritual resistance because the Jews did not attack the Nazis.
Two main forms of resistance were employed as a result of the holocaust, armed resistance and unarmed resistance. The most recognized form of resistance was armed, although unarmed resistance was displayed more often. Also, some Jewish people believed that unarmed resistance was the best way to defy the Nazi Party. In addition, non Jewish individuals would also defy the Nazi Party by simply not following order by the officers.
