Resistance to change is a tale as old as time, a story as old as rhyme. Fear of change comes from the fear of the unknown. As a bringer of change, you are seen as an intruder coming to disrupt harmony within their castle, regardless of how twisted it appears to outsiders. The longtime residents will stand guard and protect against unwelcome guests. At that moment, you are the unwelcomed guest.

At the onset, it will be rough. At times you will feel like a prisoner. People will say things they don't mean. Most likely because they were tricked once before and so, they lash out as a means of protection. In their eyes, you could never understand them or what they do. Be patient. Act with dignity. Remember, you are a guest in their castle.

Once there listen. Listen for clues in the stories being told. Take note of who could be potential allies. Realize that some of the best allies are those that are most peculiar and hide behind a facade. Don't let looks deceive you; even the chipped cup could provide needed insight.

From day one, be clear about expectations while at the same time being empathetic and compassionate. Show the team that you truly have their best interest at heart and not just there to do a "job". Don't hide from them that there will be challenges. The journey they are about to embark on will require them to come out of their comfort zone. However, done right and together, the adventure will be worth their happily ever after.
