For my recreational reading project, I chose to read the book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. My favorite thing about the book is that there are illustrations in it and how it is like comic book. The illustrations are very detailed and help me understand how things looked during that time. Before reading this book I had heard about Saddam Hussein and the Islamic revolution but I never actually knew who and what they were. I had no idea things were that bad in Iran during that time. The book educated me on what was going on during that time and how people felt about it. Marjane and her family opposed the Regime and disagreed with the rules and the opinions that he enforced. This shows that Marjane acts and feels the same way as a typical teenager does. They book also shows the class conflict of that time. Her maid couldn't be with the boy that she loved because he was in a higher class. Towards the end of the book, after the death of her jewish neighbors, Marjane starts to rebel and acts differently. She slaps her teacher and gets expelled, she gets in trouble at her new school. This is similar to my friends situation, her dad passed away from cancer and ever since then she has acted in a rebellious way. She started doing drugs and skipping school and to make matters even worse, she just found out that her mom has stage four lung cancer. I think my friend is like Marjane in a way because they are both strong, brave, and going through a difficult time. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, it was both educational and interesting. I think I was able to relate to it because she is a teenager and both of us have similar thought and actions. I would defiantly recommend this book to a friend, it was enjoyable and I there was never a boring
