The text ‘The Alchemist’ – by Paulo Coelho is a novel about a young Andalusian Shepherd (Santiago) who begins to have a recurring dream about seeking treasure at the pyramids. The story follows his journey to Egypt after he talked to a fortune teller and a wise man who told him to go. In relation to Alchemy it is the act of turning any base metal into gold. This is a truly inspirational tale about one young shepherds journey who realises the real worth is not gold but turning your life into gold. This response will discuss: how Santiago listened to the alchemist about finding yourself not the treasure, how it made me think about how someone can drop everything in pursuit of ‘themselves’. And every student can learn from is the act of turning your life into gold.

The main theme in the book is alchemy, which is the act of transforming any base metal into gold. In relation to the story, it is the act of transforming your life into gold by maximising your talents in order to achieve your destiny. Although at first, Santiago sold his flock of sheep in order to go to Egypt in search of treasure, he did not find the treasure he was looking for, instead he found a much more meaningful kind of treasure that to Santiago is valued much higher than golden riches. “There is only one way to learn and that is through action”. Anybody is able to read listen and study to their hearts content, but one is not able to attain the full experience until action is taken. Once you’re done aiming, pull the trigger. I believe that if there was one thing any student is able to take from this novel; it is the ability to always take responsibility for your action’s which is the first steeping stone in turning your life into gold.
