The Death of Responsibility In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare emphasizes the idea that many factors led to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The rivalry between the two families, the Montagues and Capulets, is the reason Romeo and Juliet cannot be together and their relationship is kept a secret. Due to many challenging obstacles and impulsive decisions, the title characters die tragically. Everyone in the play is responsible for the demises of the title characters because the decisions of the characters, such as Friar Lawrence, Friar John, and Balthasar, inevitably influence Romeo and Juliet to take actions that lead to their deaths. When Romeo was in Mantua, Balthasar went to tell Romeo news of Juliet. Balthasar told Romeo, “I saw her laid low in her kindred’s vault” (5.1. 19-21). Because of the sad news, Romeo goes to the Capulet’s tomb to perpetrate suicide. If Balthasar had not told Romeo the news, Romeo would have thought Juliet was safe and alive, and he would not have killed himself, which also resulted in Juliet’s death. When people devise plans, everyone should know about it or there will be consequences that affect others; Friar Lawrence didn’t make sure everyone knew his plan, so the miscommunication brought upon many mishaps. People should consider the consequences of their actions as they may lead to horrible events. Friar John and Balthasar didn’t realize the outcomes of not delivering the letter and telling Romeo news of Juliet, which led to the tragic deaths of the title characters. The characters cause the titular characters’ ends due to the fact that all people’s actions have consequences, and these consequences can affect the lives of those around
