On February 17, 2000, I was born in Lagos, Nigeria. My mother and I immigrated to the United States when I was 18 months old to live with my dad. We first lived in New Brighton, Minnesota for about two years. During the time we lived in New Brighton, my twin siblings, one girl and one boy, were born. Four years later, we moved to Woodbury, Minnesota. Once we moved, I started kindergarten in March of 2006 at Lake Elmo Elementary in the Stillwater Area Public School District. When my little sister was born, my parents and I knew that something was not right with her developmental skills. My sister's name is Wunmi and she is now 15 years old. At the age of 10 months, she was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome (RTT). Rett Syndrome is a genetic mutation affecting brain development in girls; also referred to as developmental delay. Rett is often misdiagnosed as autism. According to the source, some symptoms that show in RTT children are epilepsy (seizures), slowed growth, loss of movement, coordination, communication, and breathing problems. I am very proud of her and she is the most precious gift my family has been blessed with. Some people my age would feel ashamed to have a sibling with a disability, but if friends don't like your siblings then sometimes they shouldn't be your friends. If not for Wunmi, I wouldn't have gone to an amazing school district with many chances to succeed. I am very proud of the opportunities I've had; for instance, my parents now own a business called Alpha Care Family Services Inc., which is a PCA agency. The agency my parent's own hires and trains staff to help individuals like my sister. With aid from a PCA, many people with disabilities are able to live in their own home without issues.
