Revenge is defined as the act of inflicting harm on someone for a wrong caused by them. In, “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens, revenge proves to be one of the most significant themes in the book. Dickens makes it clear to the reader that revenge only leads one down a path to more troubles. In “A Tale of Two Cities”, Dickens makes it clear that revenge is not always the best path to take. Revenge is not justified because it is controlled by a person's emotions instead of their reasoning. The idea that revenge only leads to a series of more problems is demonstrated a lot by the character Madame Defarge. Justice is defined as just behavior and treatment, this is completely different from revenge. Revenge is an emotionally driven act whereas justice is acted upon with reason. In the book, Gaspard's son is ran over by a the Marquises buggie, in return Gaspard kills the Marquise in revenge of his son. This is revenge because Gaspard acts out of anger because of his son, but when Gaspard is hung, this is justice because he met the same fate as the Marquise. Thus showing that revenge and justice are two different things. People who seek revenge are treated much differently because they act differently. Madame Defarge is treated as if she is not even friends with the others of the group. Madame defarge to them is weird and creepy causing them to avoid her and alienate her. Therefore people ,such as Madame Defarge, who seek revenge are alienated because of the way they act. The “A Tale of Two Cities” theme of revenge supports the idea that revenge is not justified and leads one down a darker path. Revenge is not justified because it is caused by someone's emotions and revenge is completely different from justice. People that seek revenge are treated differently from people who don't because they act differently. Therefore, revenge is not a good thing especially when compared to
