In the autobiography, The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande, the author shares the conflicts she encountered throughout her childhood. Reyna went through many changes throughout her life; both of Reyna’s parents moved away, and she was forced to move a plethora of times. She moved to both of her grandparent’s houses, back with her mom, and all the way to El Otro Lado to live with her father. After moving in with him, her life changed dramatically. Going to a new school with new people, learning a different language, and living with a man she hardly knew altered her life excessively. This deeply affected Reyna and her siblings. Everyone goes through tough times and difficult changes, just like Reyna. I had a big change in my life, as well, but it is not as big as Reyna’s. Changes can be good or bad, and mine was bad. I lost gymnastics, the sport that was my passion and I loved more than anything, and she lost her mother, i.e., how her mother used to be like. Reyna’s change was much harder and more significant than my change, but they both hurt us both deeply. Sometimes change is good, and sometimes it can be bad. Change can bring more opportunities for people, but losing something or someone hurts. Although I had to let go of gymnastics, my change brought another opportunity, and that is volleyball. Even though Reyna’s mother changed dramatically, She got to move in with her father. She got the opportunity to make memories with him that she never got to do while living with her mother. Everyone goes through change, and sometimes you lose people and things you truly love, so remember to always cherish the moments you have with them before they’re
