In 1778, the illustrious armed force comprised of about 50,000 normal troops consolidated with more than 30,000 German (Hessian) hired fighters. George Washington, interestingly, never had more than 20,000 troops under his charge at any one time. A large portion of these American troopers were youthful (running in age from their initial high schoolers to their mid-20s), landless, untalented, and poor. Others were contracted workers and slaves who were serving as substitutes for their bosses and had been guaranteed opportunity at the war's end. Additionally in the Continental armed force were numerous ladies who tended to the wiped out and injured, cooked, retouched garments, covered the dead, and once in awhile served in battle.
