The progression inherent in these three sentences conveys the meaning and purpose of this essay by demonstrating how he slowly started to think more maturely. The purpose of this essay is that no matter how people portray you as, it does not define you. Everything you do does not define you, you define it. People judge you based on your actions. Alexie’s use of parallel structure and repetition in the last two paragraph are two good examples of the purpose of the essay. These two paragraphs convey the meaning of the essay, seeing how he kept everything short and straightforward. Alexie's started this essay in a child’s perspective. He mentions his family, his living condition, and how he taught himself how to read. Now reading this essay you question yourself, “ how can a young boy be so knowledgeable?”. Just comparing Alexie's childhood to the average child, you can tell the way he was raised is in a completely different way.
