Labor Union Organizer and Civil Rights leader, Cesar Chavez, justifies the death of Martin Jr. Luther King for the world to advocate for nonviolence in his article for the magazine of a religious organization. Chavez’s purpose is to gain more supporters and conveys the idea that using non violence against people will allow victory against enemies. He creates an assertive, yet empowering tone in order to convince readers that the idea of nonviolent resistance is the best option for powerful acts of justice for Americans and other people.
Chavez begins his emphasis on the idea nonviolence being the best option for justice by describing to the Americans and other people that change is achievable by working together. In the speech, he has certain words that are highly negative and positive connotative words to set an assertive and empowering tone to help convey his standpoint. He chose certain words like struggle, suffer, and violence to demonstrate his frank attitude towards violence; on the contrary, his other chosen words like powerful, opportunity, freedom, and self-determination is to contrast how nonviolence can be more effective to gain peace and justice. Additionally the writing style of this article, specifically the sentence structure, should be more convincing for the tone of his speech. The amount of short sentences to long sentences are used to emphasis that he feels strongly towards non violence acts.
