The activist, Mahatma Gandhi, in his speech to the Indian National Congress insists that the A.I.C.C. must nonviolently act to secure the independence of India from Great Britain. Gandhi’s purpose is to convince the people before him, and the rest of the country, that they need to become independent from Great Britain. He uses a resolute tone in order to convey to his listeners the importance of being nonviolent while trying to gain independence.
Gandhi begins his speech by telling his audience “I want you to understand two things very clearly and to consider them from the same point of view from which I am placing them before you.” and then says “Let me, however, hasten to assure that I am the same Gandhi as I was in 1920.” to assure the audience
