The artifact that I chose for this assignment was George Bush’s address to the nation following the 9/11 attacks. This speech is very powerful and achieved a sense of togetherness after feeling completely lost by the attacks. George Bush is trying to make sense of what has happened in this speech while also being sympathetic and trying to offer comfort. The audience of this speech is the American people, with who every single person in this group had been affected in some way by the attacks. I chose this speech to write about because while i’m not a fan of George Bush, I think this speech was incredibly emotional and was also impactful in creating mass patriotism that he would use to build his presidency on.

Americans felt this way too, demonstrated by a jump from a 51% approval rating to 86% one week from before and after the attacks, according to gallup.com. Bush used a mix of pathos and ethos in this speech, appealing to emotion while being a strong leader. The strongest example of pathos used in this speech was when Bush said, “The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger”. Bush was passionate in this speech, speaking solemnly and appearing as if he was speaking from his heart, not of a teleprompter.
