Often in sermons ministers pastors persuade their audience to behave in a spiritual or moral fashion. Such is the case in "sinners in the hands of God". By Jonathan Edwards were he describes to his audience, that the lord gives sinners second chance. Edwards wanted to impact his audience by appealing to their fears,pity and vanity. Edwards had an encouraging impact on his Puritan audience because of his use of cautionary tone because the author is stating "the god that helps you over the pit of hell". Also the author states "O sinner consider the fearful danger you are in". He used symbolic figurative language by stating "washed them from their sins in his own blood".

Also in paragraph 11 he states "how awful is it to be left behind at such a day to see so many others feasting. He is explaining to the audience that, the sinners have a chance to repent. The author is trying to induce his audience by using metaphors as in, compares a door to mercy to show Christ is letting sinners pass their punishment.

Moreover, Edwards had an vexed impact on his Puritan audience because, his use of figurative language in paragraph 2, Edwards states "is not at present very angry with them as he is with many miserable creatures now tormented in hell". The author also states "his anger is as great towards them as those that are actually suffering the executive of the fierceness of his wrath in hell". He was very angry in his quotes because people were taking advantage of him.
