Lincoln’s message in his First Inaugural Address was towards the Southern states. He talks about the “big picture” that he knows everyone is concerned about. Despite Lincoln being republican, he does not want to take the Souths rights or peace away from them. Lincoln quotes himself from previous speeches stating that he doesn’t want to make slavery illegal in order to show that he had always been against using force to make slavery end. Moving on, Lincoln shows emphasis that the country could not and would not be legally broken up and that the constitution is what holds the states together.
