In the crazy time that was the 2016 United States election the few front runners were Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump. Michelle Obama decided to comment on the recent controversy that recently arose about president elect Donald Trump’s treatment of women. On October 13, 2016 Michelle Obama spoke to the city of New Hampshire to try and convince the people of New Hampshire to not look up to Trump for he is a bad role model. Michelle Obama is a mother of two and was married to the 44th president of the united states, Barack Obama. Through repetition, simile, and several appeals to trustworthiness, Obama emphasizes her hope that Donald Trump will not become the next president of the United States.

“And now, here I am, out on the campaign trail in an election where we have consistently been hearing hurtful, hateful language about women.” She tries to let her audience know that she is human too and this topic affects her in the same ways it affects everyone else. “And I know it's a campaign, but this isn't about politics. It's about basic human decency.” She makes sure that her audience knows that she is not making this speech because of just the campaign but to also open our eyes to the bigger truth. Michelle Obama is addressing a very controversial topic and needs to make sure she is seen as a trusted source in the eyes of her audience so that they don’t take what she says for granted.

Throughout this speech by Michelle Obama, she used a variety of rhetorical strategies to improve her overall purpose. She made sure that her speech didn’t go in on ear and out the other for her audience by using repetition to make them remember. Her simile use made sure that her audience understood what she was saying and not just going over their heads. When she appeals to trustworthiness she wants to make sure that her audience can trust what she says.
