In June 12, 1987, President Reagan gave a speech at Brandenburg Gate emphasizing the importance of freedom through rhetorical strategies by creating comparisons between past, present, and future, speaking in the audience’s native language, and drawing metaphors and symbolism to explain how dire it is to tear the Berlin Wall down.

In Reagan’s speech to the Germans, he speaks in their native language in certain instances, “Es gibt nur ein Berlin.” In this, he not only speaks in German but also states there is one Berlin, creating unity. He does so to appeal to the audience. Reagan attempts to create the image that he is one of them, therefore can be trusted, only seeking the best intentions for them.

Reagan also creates comparisons between
