The Pleasures of Eating written by author Wendell Berry, focuses on our health as humans and how necessary it is for today’s society to know where their food is actually coming from. Berry’s main audience throughout his essay is the “City People”, or also known as everyone who shops at a grocery store. Berry speculates that eating starts with the planting of vegetables along with fruits and wants his audience to find the pleasure in that. Berry states that we, the consumers, have lost touch with the influence of food, and wants to bring us back closer to it. As “City People” we are no longer concerned about where our food comes from but in fact more concerned with finding the cheapest prices, which is the problem. How is this possible? Berry strives to give the reader the answers to this in his essay. Berry clarifies these pleasures by allowing us to become more involved in the food we eat everyday. As a consumer, knowing where and how your food is made makes one more knowledgeable. Knowledge equals power, and one who eats healthy foods will have a greater appreciation for where that food came from in the end. Berry asks the reader a plethora of questions regarding how and why we buy the food that we eat everyday. He uses many different techniques to convince us that the way we eat and purchase foods isn’t the best way. His use of informal language, logos, ethos, and pathos in the essay all play a role in making the reader question their lifestyle choices and make the reader trust him. Berry uses facts, raw emotion, and personal experience to prove he is
