In Washington’s Farewell Address, rhetorical questions, alliterations, and tricolas are used to convince and warn his audience of sectionalism. Additionally he warns of European affairs, permanent alliances, and political parties.
Washington uses rhetorical questions throughout his address to influence and subtly manipulate his audience’s response. In paragraph 39 it mentions, “Why forego the advantages of so peculiar a situation? Why… entangle our peace and prosperity of European ambition…?” These questions convince people that it would be unwise to maintain a permanent alliance with Europe. However, there would be an exception of having temporary alliances in an extreme emergency. Additionally, Washington’s use of rhetorical question in paragraph 28, “Where is the security for the property…if the sense of religions obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice?”, persuades his audience that religion must not be mixed

For example, in paragraph 6, “In the discharge of this trust…with good intentions, contributed towards the organization and administration of the government…”, Washington effectively reveals to his audience that he cares about his country and its well being and that he is disposed to do anything for his country’s wellbeing. In paragraph 45, “In relation to the still subsisting war in Europe, my proclamation…, is the index of my plan.”, Washington demonstrates to be responsible and well prepared, evoking hope for the future. Overall, Washington’s Farewell Address warns against permanent alliances with foreign countries, sectionalism, and political parties.
