Our rhetoric pointed out that reading “…demands both attention and insight-lending participation” (Kennedy | Gioia pg. 3). I think this is what John Updike was trying to convey in his excerpt titled “Why Write?” (Kennedy | Gioia pg. 15). He points out that he receives many inquires asking for clarity on the message in his writing. He eludes that the writer does not always need to take the reader by the hand and leave a clear trail of breadcrumbs. It is acceptable to leave somethings left unsaid, or implied, so the reader can ponder and explore to reach their own conclusions.
