In this speech written by Florence Kelley, the author describes how child labor laws work in the united states. She uses ethos, pathos, and logos along with figurative language to express her feelings.She does not come right out and say that these are unfair, however the reader can infer by her diction that she does feel this way. Florence Kelley uses a unique tone of ethos, logos, and pathos, to make the reader feel sad and understand that child labor is wrong. She uses speech like “they vary in age from six and seven years old, and eight nine and ten years to fourteen fifteen and sixteen years in more enlightened states.”. This is used to evoke emotions from certain readers and show her point of view. She uses “We can enlist the working men” to show the readers that we do not need little girls to be doing our work, we have men and women who are perfectly capable of working. While this shows the more credible side, it also allows the readers to know what exactly child labor entails, and how we can stop it.

“North and south carolina and Georgia place no restriction upon the work of children at night, and while we sleep little white girls will be working tonight in the mills in those states, working eleven hours at night”. This fact does more than show us what is happening. This fact, evokes more sadness and relatability to everyone reading or hearing this speech. She wanted to use this fact, to inform the readers, while also using their emotions to help her speech
