Rhetorical Analysis On Agricultural Gleaning

In the town a Waterbury, the Rotary Club of Waterbury and held a speech about agricultural gleaning in the state of Vermont. The speech was given on March 28, 2017 by Julia Scheier, the operations director for the non-profit organization, Salvation Farms. Julia used a variety of speaking methods to try and convince the audience of the importance and need for agricultural gleaning. Agricultural gleaning is the process of collecting crops that were not harvested because it would not be sold and made into a profit for a number of different reasons. She was a very comfortable speaker who used good speaking skills, effective visual aids, and persuasive methods to her advantage throughout her speech. The speech that Julia gave used a variety of speaking methods that helped convince the audience of her points which did not include a podium or even notes. It was very clear that she had gained knowledge of her audience beforehand and prepared for it. The Rotary Club members to whom she gave the speech, are a much older group of people that cannot follow along for speeches that are quickly spoken. Julia used a slow rate of delivery which made it easier for the audience members to follow along. As said in Speak Up, “resist any temptation to speed up your delivery to fit an overly long speech into the allocated time. Instead, shorten the content of the presentation”(380). It was easy to tell that she did cut back the information because she handed out pamphlets and let the audience members know that more detailed statistics and extensive information could be found
