In culture and society all throughout time, money has been extremely predominant in culture, and following such elusiveness of money the world-famous quote “money can’t buy everything.” However, for the most part money can provide happiness through physical possessions, but the pleasantries provided by money cannot provide emotional happiness. Hazlitt provides detail on his standpoint of money’s ability to provide happiness, by using a stern, almost cynical, choice of words, parallel structure, and a juxtaposition of ones’ life before and after wealth. Hazlitt conveys a melancholy and despondent mood by using words that have a cynical-like tone. Using words such as exile, distress, rejected and disappointment throughout the passage. Hazlitt
