During this essay I will show the uses of rhetorical devices in Obama's “a perfect union” speech that he gave in 2008 while he was running for his first term as president. At this time he is giving the speech to show that he is the right man to be the president of the United States after statements from his former pastor made questions arise to challenge if he was pro-america or if he had the same views that his pastor's words had depicted. During the speech he strongly uses rhetorical devices to persuade the audience that he is not a bad man,but that he is a man that is right for America and they can change all the wrong that is going on in the country at the time.There are many devices he uses i will identify them and show you how they are used to persuade the audience.

During the 2008 election presidential candidate Barack Obama found himself in a sticky situation where he needed to show and prove your support of the US at the allegations of his former pastor Jeremiah Wright. In order to do so he talks of how Jeremiah officiated his wedding and baptize the children using a sense of imagery to get in touch with everyone listening. In the sections that I read he used such devices as paradox, allusion, and even repetition of words. He used all of these devices or more to persuade the audience that it was time to take a stand against racism and to show them that he is not against America but wants to see the rate change for it and its people. As you know now, Obama did a great job of using these devices as he was elected not only once but for two terms.
