Billy Pilgrim was born in Illium, New York in 1922. Drafted into the war, during his first year of college, he meets a fellow soldier, Roland Weary. As the war goes on, Weary dies in the prison hospital. Pilgrim and his gang moved into a POW camp and escaped when the war is over. Pilgrim went back to college and became an optometrist. He became wealthy and settled down with his wife and had two kids. He went to a optometrist convention in montreal, but survived a plane crash in the mountains.
