The original name of the colony was the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

Rhode Island was first called Providence Plantations. King Charles provided a charter which then changed the name to Rhode Island. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1631. Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for a radical view of religious tolerance and separation of the church and state. Once he was banished he bought land from the Narragansett Indians. This battle was called “The Great Swamp Fight” during the battle it is said that approximately 300 natives were killed. On December 19th the colonists marched into the natives village, the Narragansetts entire fort was destroyed including their homes and their food. This resulted in many of the Native Americans leaving rhode island and settling in the western parts of New England. The colonists usually traded with the Narragansett tribe, they traded many tools including hatchets, metal arrow heads, and knife blades. The way of life in Colonial Rhode Island was determined by religion, wealth, and how colonists could make a living. The colonists largest success was the large amounts of tobacco that they produced and exported. The major trade city in Rhode island was Providence, which was a port that allowed easy access for trading and exporting goods such as fish, timber, maple syrup, copper and tobacco. The colonists major hardship was the war during 1675 war with Narragansett Many colonists were killed however the outcome was successful resulting with the natives leaving Rhode
