Richard Angus Young was born in Hillsborough, North Carolina on April 26th, 1946. He was the child of Jonathan Angus Young and Barbara` Anne, Jonathan served in World War 2 and was a devout Christian man with a strong hatred for the black community. As a young boy, Richard was an outgoing child. As he aged, his father developed a habit of consuming alcohol on a daily basis. The habit was formed from the stress of working at the steel mills more than 50 miles away. As the habit worsened, his father started beating Richard for speaking out of turn or even saying anything that didn't relate to his thoughts.

He ripped Richard out of bed and started screaming at him.
"You've been smoking in my house?! How long has been going on?!"
"Dad, wait!"
Jonathan threw Richard into the wall and hooked him in the stomach. "You want to ruin your life? Well, let me help you. I'm taking you out of school and you're working at the Shell station."
As the years went on Richard became more and more miserable, he quit his job and rode the train to Washington D.C., during this time the Vietnam peace protests flooded the streets. As Richard got off the train, he was bombarded by protesters, asking him if he wanted to join their cause. Tired, flustered, and looking for a purpose Richard joined them. The following weeks Richard's life was nothing but waking up, protesting, and then finding a place to sleep.
