In the poem Richard Cory by Edwin Robinson, is about a handsome, wealthy, and admired man who was envied by many of those who considered themselves less than him, but even though he was thought of someone who was outstanding, Cory "one calm summer night went home and put a bullet through his head" this act that contrasts with the speaker's characterization of him. Analyzing the author's style, use of ironic language and imagery, this portrays the public's view and ideals of Richard Cory are one of the reasons Richard Cory committed suicide. Richard Cory was portrayed as a king and seem to be considered to be one of the lucky ones. Although, “one summer night, he went home and put a bullet through his head” why did Cory shoot himself when he had everything? Through their own assumptions, and exaggerations it seemed that they presumed Cory to be royalty when in reality he was just a regular guy that leading towards committing suicide. Richard Cory is an ironic poem because people automatically assume that prosperous people love their lives because of the money they have and assume being wealthy is a guarantee a life of happiness and luxury. Richard Cory was a numerous amount of things such as very respectful, rich, and full of manners. Although everybody saw a rich and powerful man that everybody envied. Richard Cory was just a regular man, who also suffered from loneliness. Just because Richard Cory didn’t show any emotion doesn’t mean he wasn’t feeling emotions, the truth was that he was extremely unhappy with his life. Even though money can be great for many things in life, money cannot buy love, happiness, or affection. A lesson to be learned is to never judge a book by it’s cover because you never know what’s actually
