Great leaders are the masters of compromise. When people are told to recall one of our nation’s greatest leaders, they think of our many Presidents. President’s are in that role because of their leadership skills, but it’s the people behind the scenes who I believe are our greatest leaders. Especially Richard Holbrooke, an American diplomat, assistant secretary of state, and a Peace Corps Official. Richard Holbrooke’s honesty, ability to delegate, communicate, confidence, commitment, and creativity to solve problems regarding peace allowed him to be one of the greatest leaders our nation has ever seen. My father showed me a documentary of his life called The Diplomat, and it made me rethink what a leader really is. I was amazed to see a leader who actually had a back bone and never needed recognition for his work. Peace was all he wanted, and he effectively guided many countries towards it. He was a man of many qualities, which created a great leader to look up to. The war in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the monthly killings of 500 people would have continued without Richard Holbrooke. One of the many questions politicians of his time asked themselves was how would the war have ended without him? Throughout his whole career, his greatest diplomatic success was his work in the Balkans. His greatest commitment was in creating friendships. It is what he did best. He created so many long lasting relationships because of his deep understanding of every issue, unlike the other representatives.
