Richard Misrach’s Cabbage Crop Near Brownsville, Texas exemplifies the backbreaking work migrants suffered through as they crossed the border for a better future for their families. This piece of art was created to manifest the way migrants worked night and day to provide for their loved ones. Misrach embodied the struggle immigrants went through to cross the border not just through word, but through his viewpoint on the stories told throughout his piece. The stretch of cabbage reaching towards the horizon seems beautiful, but Misrach is able to capture their untold stories. As I was observing the Cabbage Crop Near Brownsville, Texas, what pulled me towards it was the giant wooden fence that divides the field of cabbages from the other side of the fence. In the biography, Misrach writes: “The border between brownsville, Texas, and the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.” This description showed how the border segregated the mexican immigrants from the U.S. The way the fence hid them from what could have been great on the other side, but they are not privileged or able enough to see what is on the other side of the fence; they are told that this is the best that they can do and they don’t know enough to reach for something higher.

These two major words caught my attention in the biography. The way Misrach uses those words to overview how migrants had absolutely no rights mainly because they weren’t in the U.S. system. This document was the one thing that could guarantee Mexican’s their freedom to do so as they please. Could you imagine not being able to see your family because you had to make sure they got the money they needed to eat? To survive?
