Creative nonfiction relays true events through the creative lens of the writer in order to provide a work that hopes to not only share an experience with the reader, but help discover something about that experience along side them. The nonfiction aspect of the genre can be limiting and challenging for writers.The past begins to fade as soon as it becomes a memory; however as the subhead in chapter six states the truth is "What You 'Make of It,'" meaning that what is understood of that situation, or the "discovery" that is produced from it is more important than facts alone (55). By utilizing succinct and carefully chosen detail, characterization, "intimate point of view", "distinctive voice," image and metaphor, creative nonfiction writers can create stories of their truths that captivate their readers (12). …show more content…

In time the man will take up a knife and crack open your flesh like a ripe melon." His use of language, interjections, memory, and detail also help convey his "struggle to understand the feelings he has accumulated over a lifetime of surgical practice."
