I believe in the author's argument that Black Boy's "historical inaccuracies have a deliberate, metaphorical purpose".  The author talks about Wright having a close relationship with a white family down in the South where he had a better understanding with them than his own family. There's also the part where Wright left out, where his mother and some of his friends parents were successful.
