The story of Discovering Books was an autobiographical essay about Richard Wright, who is an African American man who lived in the southern part of the U.S. at the time. Richard begins his writing with him reading a newspaper denouncing the author Mencken. At the time, he didn’t understand why his writing was being castigated, so Richard begins to solve the issue of obtaining a library card so he could read his work. He couldn’t afford to be found reading any books, so he forged library notes from an Irish Catholic man who endowed Richard with his library card. In return, Richard would have to tell the Irish man what he gained from reading the books he acquired. As it was almost routine, word spread that I was a no good person. This time most of the children to ignore me, and I was soon labeled as an outcast. Even when I was in my worst moments, I knew I had to continue going to school and let it effect my classes. After a couple of months, my friends seemed to turn against me. I didn’t enjoy school at all, and I didn’t know why my friends started to ignore me. The world was almost turning against me, I didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere. I was often lying in bed thinking about what to do with myself, so I decided to listen to some random advice of to stay positive by my mother. If I could make it out of this situation, then happiness will definitely come my way sometime. Happiness and confidence did come, only after the year was over. I changed myself over the summer; it came from maturity and a decision that change was needed for confidence. The main child who hated me moved schools, and I started to befriend almost everyone. What made me relate to this story, is that we can either accept fate and do nothing and continue in a downwards path, or continue on with a goal. My goal was to get through school no matter my situation, because people tend to go nowhere if they
