Paine, in his book, Rights of Man, expressed his beliefs that America, despite its different forms and habits of government, different languages, and different forms of worship, had remained and would remain unified since its government was founded on “the principles of society and the rights of man.” From that ideal government, Paine claimed that “every difficulty retires”, that equity and peace would reign. Although Paine’s ideals held true to a certain extent back then and even today, Paine misrepresented the state of America in 1791 and had unrealistic beliefs that absolute harmony would ensue from a just government.
