RIP to the RIP system? It’s a cold December night in New York City. Just days before Christmas, and everyone in the city is running ramped trying to get last minute shopping and baking done. The emergency room is packed full of patients with a multitude of injuries. There is anything from burns to a broken ankle. How is the ER staff suppose to assess all these injuries and decide who needs to be treated first? Is it the lady with a burn on her hand from pulling her Christmas cookies out of the oven, or the lady that broke her ankle running around F.A.O Schwartz trying to by the latest toys for her kids? All of this can be done with a little help from the RIP system. This computer system helps doctors and nurses assess the injuries of each patient and helps to decide who needs to be treated first. All that needs to be done is enter in the patients gathered information from triage into the computer. From there RIP will give staff a percent probability of survival and then print out the recommended treatment process. This is because some believe that society today is becoming too reliant on technology. They believe that the decision to save a life or let them go should be made by human judgment and not a computer. Medical ethicist, Arthur Caplan of Philadelphia, makes the point of that computers will be incorrect about 5% of the time. Even though there is a small margin of error, everyone and everything isn’t perfect. This is not a perfect world, and mistakes will be made. No one or anything can be right 100% of the time.
