The Rise of Women Women have come a very long way in America and Europe since the 1850’s. Women’s roles in society had been greatly limited due to the fact that they had been considered inferior to males, and even today there is still controversy about the topic. In today’s world women are contributing much more thanks to the feminism views that have been pushed and evolved over time. From starting as housewives, to being able to work in factories and industries and to finally earn their right to vote, it has been a long road for women to be where they are today and it definitely was not an easy journey for them to partake in. Financially, women have made a great difference since the 1850’s. In the 19th century, women were not able to acquire a job. Many and almost all professions would refuse to have a women working for them. Their role as a woman was to marry and have children. After that, they were expected to be devoted housewives and care for their husband and children. This included them spending all day long and every day cooking cleaning, and many other tasks that could be done from home. Since almost all women were expected to be housewives, there was no reason for them to get any type of education. Even during the Industrial Revolution when women started to get jobs in factories and industries, these jobs still required little or no education. It was not until 1860 until the first coeducational school was developed, and the main focus for girls at this time was teaching them topics that would help them become a better housewife one day. A woman named Sarah Joseph Hale became an editor of a magazine called Godey’s Lady Book, which was a magazine that strongly encouraged women to get an education and emphasized the importance that it had for them.
