Shawshank Redemption is an intriguing drama based off of Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. Main character, Andy Dufresne, is convicted of murdering his wife and his wife’s lover in cold blood, putting him in Shawshank State Penitentiary. Through a series of events, Andy becomes the financial guy in the prison for people from the “outside”, the prison’s employees, and even the warden himself. Although he is portrayed as a devout Christian who wants to help people do right by God, the warden proves to be a deceptive and corrupt administrator as well as a murderer. So when Andy figures out that he can prove his innocence with the help of a fellow inmate, Tommy Williams, and get out of prison, he brings it up with the warden. The warden gives Andy a month in solitary confinement and has Tommy killed. Andy then decides to escape through a hole that he had been digging for years. When Andy first gets to prison, the warden states that the new inmates are never to take God’s name in vain. And they will figure out the rest. On multiple occasions, Captain Byron Hadley takes God’s name in vain. Furthermore, all of the new inmate were issued a Bible. During a cell check one day, Norton starts a conversation about the bible that he gave to Andy because he had just picked it up. As Norton walks out of the cell, he realizes that he still had Andy’s Bible. Norton then gives the Bible back to Andy, saying “Salvation lies within”. Later, Norton summons Andy to his office.
