Graduating from high school and moving on to college was considered a rite of passage for me. I am the first generation in my family to attend college and felt ecstatic to be taking that first step towards the real world. From graduation to applying to MDC to fixing my schedule and buying books, I quickly realized that college is a completely different environment, and I need to work even harder to secure my future.
My future plans were already set before starting senior year, but as graduation were closing in, I noticed many seniors were on the verge of senioritis. Many have made their decision on where to go, but some were concerned they will not even graduate. My plan was simple-attend MDC for the first two years for my AA/AS degree and the transfer to either UF or NSU for my BS degree in Pharmacy.

After applying online, I walked down to American Senior High to electronically send my official transcript. A week later, MDC called to notify me that they received my transcript, but it was marked “Incomplete”, with no graduation date posted. I grew suspicious and went back to the high school to confront Mrs. Palencia, who was in charge of all students’ records, on this matter. Apparently, my FCAT scores were not transferred and put in the system when my family moved from Broward to Dade County. Palencia sent an email to the county about this and said it will be resolved in a week. That following week, I came back to see that it was fixed and sent the transcript again to MDC, and it was processed successfully. Then my dad and I drove down to the financial aid office to submit the tax documents. Two weeks later, I received a call from them, stating my financial aid was denied and instead, I was granted the American Dream Scholarship, which helped pay for my tuition and fees.
