Robber barons are businessman who though can become successful, do so in rather evil ways. They are known for being selfish, vindictive, and sometimes just down right evil. Through my continuous research over John Pierpont Morgan, I have come to the conclusion that he cannot be anything other than a robber baron. From his upbringing as a young and spoiled child to the way he chose to spend his money after wealth all lead me to the conclusion that he had a personality and thought process of a robber baron. To begin with, Morgan was born into wealth. Born in 1837, John Pierpont Morgan was born to father, Julius Morgan and mother, Juliet Morgan, Julius Morgan is a well established banker himself, making him and his family very wealthy. Along with infamous inventor, Thomas Edison, John created the business, U.S. Steel, creating America’s first billion dollar corporation. The higher the demand for the product that they created together became, the lower the working conditions within their buildings. The workers within the building suffered insufficient building conditions, extremely low wages, and ridiculously long labor hours. This selfish thought process that J.P. Morgan had of, “as long as I’m making money, I don’t care about anyone else’s suffering,” is just further evidence as to what exactly makes Mr. Morgan a robber baron. Final evidence of what makes Morgan a robber baron can be found when we look into how exactly Morgan spent his money. Morgan spent most of his money to please himself. He invested in multiple paintings and sculptures, claiming himself as a collector.
