The short story Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot by Robert Butler is an interesting lesson on what a bad marriage is. The reader can actually take this story and learn from these characters mistakes. Obviously, the author wrote this story and added some comedic relief in order to shed some light on this serious subject; which helps the reader acknowledge that this isn’t real life. It is not every day that your dead husband returns to you in the form of a parrot and watches as you continue your life with a different guy every night. The quote, “I never can quite say as much as I know.” (Butler 187) is essential to the theme of the story and what being married is all about; communication! Communication is key; it allows two people to share what they are feeling, thinking about, and our fears and concerns, without that then a marriage simply cannot work. Butler’s theme for this story is failure of communication within a marriage results in having an untrustworthy and unhappy life. He had two chances to speak the truth and let his wife know who he was feeling yet he was a weak person and let her get away with whatever she wanted to do no matter how much it hurt him. The theme of this story was that failure of communication within a marriage results in having an untrustworthy and unhappy life. The symbols, setting and even title of this story proved that because it shows how unhappy always thinking his wife was cheating and thinking he never was enough.
