Dubbed “the city that never sleeps,” New York City is famous for its bustling crowds, Broadway entertainment, and soaring skyscrapers. Located at the meeting point of the Hudson River and Atlantic Ocean, the Big Apple is composed of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. New York City is the largest city in the entire United States with a population of 8.5 million people which continues to grow exponentially. The city harbours over 100 museums and thousands of galleries, making it one of the best cities for art and culture. He named the project “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors,” which was an homage to Robert Frost’s poem “Mending Wall.”“Arch” was an installation that was on display from October 12 to February 11, 2017 in Washington Square Park, as part of his ambitious project. The artwork was a 37-foot silver, steel cage that mimicked the shape of the marble arch that it was embedded under. Through the center of the cage, Ai Weiwei cut out a passageway in the silhouette of two people in embrace. The passage was lined with a ribbon of polished stainless steel with allowed visitors to view their own reflection as they walked under “Arch.” Due to the project’s grand scale, several parties including the city government, the parks and transportation department, and the Public Art Fund were involved in bringing this project to life. The Public Art Fund commissioned Ai Weiwei’s vision as part of their 40th anniversary. Ai Weiwei intended for his art to shed light on the worldwide refugee crisis. Because of this, Ai Weiwei also installed many of his pieces in historically immigrant neighborhoods to convey his message.
