Roberto Clemente by: Evelynn C. My name is Roberto Clemente Walker and this is my story….. August 18th, 1934 I was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico I have seven siblings four brothers and two sisters, I went to vizcarondo high school and graduated then decided to play softball with the sello rojo team. As time went on I signed with the Pittsburgh pirates and became their most valuable player and was the first Hispanic player to reach 3,000 hits, including 240 home runs! Then on November 14th, 1964 I got married to an amazing woman named Vera Cristina Zabla and we had 3 sons named: Roberto Jr., Luis Roberto, and Roberto Enrique.
Although I am a baseball player I also did a lot of charity work for children in Puerto Rico and Latin American and Caribbean countries during the off seasons, often delivering baseball equipment and food to those in need. In the Beginning in 1973, MLB presents the Roberto Clemente Award named Commissioner's Award, 1971 & 1972 every year to a player with outstanding baseball playing skills who is personally involved in community work. A trophy and a donation check for a charity of the player's choice is presented annually at the World Series. A panel of three makes the final determination of the award recipient from an annual list of selected players. During the off season, I played with the Santarem Crabbers in the Puerto Rican baseball winter league, where he was already considered a star. He was traded to the Corliss’s team (Caribbean
